My first astrophoto,Comet Hale-Bopp. This photo was taken just outside of Ellensberg, Washington. At the time I had a 10" Meade LX3, fork mount. It was a 90 second exposure using Fuji 1600 slide film through a 50mm lens on a Nikon F3, piggy back. What's wrong with this picture? Hoping to let the most light in, I opened up the lens to it's f1.8 position (all the way). If you look around the edges of the picture, the stars look like little UFOs. This is showing "coma" in the lens. I should have closed down the lens to f2.8 or so, and lengthened the exposure time. Also my alignment was not very good, which contributed to the problem. Barely visible , in the foreground are some trees. This was taken as the comet approached the horizon.
